Microsoft Sets Windows 8 Launch as Oct. 26

Microsoft, one of the biggest names in the computer industry has announced that October 26th, Friday will be the launch date of Windows 8. This means that three months from now, the much-awaited software will be available to Windows loyalists and patrons.

On that day as well, new PCs with the Windows 8 operating system will be available. Brandon LeBlanc, spokesman of the company recently posted this announcement on Microsoft’s blog.

Before LeBlanc put up the announcement, president of Windows and Windows Live division Stephen Sinofsky mentioned this development at Microsoft’s Global Exchange. The Microsoft Global Exchange or MSX is a meeting where company executives, sales personnel, and product managers come together for an internal meeting to discuss developments, concerns and other important issues within or affecting the company.
The meeting is not open to the general public.

The date of choice of Microsoft does not come as a surprise to many given that Windows 7 was released on October 22, 2009. October 26, 2012 is also the second-to-last Thursday of the month. Media outlets like Computerworld speculated that the launch of Windows 8 would be on October 25, 2012. Close enough.

Just last week, Microsoft released a statement hinting that Windows 8 would surface sometime in late October. They also said that the operating system would hit the RTM or ‘release to manufacturing’ period in August. The RTM is an important time as this is when certification of the software happens. Once the software has been certified, they then send it to original equipment manufacturers. Some of these include HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Sony, among many others. Once the software reaches these manufacturers, installation on the new PCs can commence.

Other releases in October
For Microsoft fans, the date of October 26th is not only significant if you are looking to purchase a new PC, upgrades to Windows 8 will also be made available for $39.99. Users of Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 can all avail of this upgrade. Without a doubt, this price is definitely a cost-effective one.

Users who choose to upgrade their current operating systems will be entitled to Windows 8 Pro, a version of Windows 8 that comes with additional features.

In addition to the release of Windows 8 and the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, Microsoft will also be launching its tablet called ‘Surface’. Surface will be competing with other popular tablets in the market such as the iPad, Kindle, Asus Tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Andoid Tab, and many more. However, the exact date of the launch remains to be seen. Microsoft has merely hinted that the release date would be ‘around the time’ Windows 8 is dropped into the market.

Other important factors such as the price of the tablet and whether other manufacturers that use Windows will also release tablets are still unknown at the moment.

History of Microsoft
Microsoft Corporation was founded in 1975 in New Mexico by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Its success and popularity have only grown since. It is considered to be the world’s largest software producer. Microsoft’s offices are located at Microsoft Redmond Campus in Washington. Despite the success of competitor Apple in the computer industry, Microsoft is still number one when it comes to PC operating systems being used all around the world.

This is due in part to Microsoft’s software being used in applications like Bing, game consoles such as Xbox and Xbox 360, MSN, and a host of mobile phones.

Most recently, Microsoft has entered the world of tablets, dubbing its creation as ‘Microsoft Surface’. Around 90,000 people are employed at Microsoft.
